On October 16, Wang Qiaoying from the middle school English department won First Prize in the Yuhang District English Quality Lesson Competition. Her lesson centered on “How to Write an Essay,” a challenging text that required helping students understand the essay as a genre and transfer their learning to personal writing. Wang designed an essay revision task as the final output, guiding students to transform an imperfect essay into a polished one, then connected the lesson to students’ real lives. Behind the success stood a collaborative department, with master teacher Hu Yuebo providing full support from the very first rehearsal. Wang herself once taught high school English — a perspective from the school’s six-year integrated curriculum that lets her guide middle schoolers with higher-level expectations. Her biggest takeaway? “Simplify complexity and teach according to how students learn.” A good class, she says, is measured not by how much the teacher talks, but by how much students participate.
